Dank einer großzügigen Schenkung präsentiert die Albertina erstmals eine Werkgruppe von zwölf monumentalen Aktzeichnungen, die der niederländische Künstler Karel Appel (Amsterdam 1921–2006 Zürich) in den achtziger Jahren geschaffen hat.

Appel zählt zu den Mitbegründern der 1948 in Paris gegründeten Künstlergruppe CoBrA, deren Malerei für eine neue expressive Figuration steht. In Appels Arbeiten verbinden sich Rationalität und Emotion sowie Abstraktion und Figuration. Kraftvolle Farben und gestisches Malen prägen auch sein wichtiges zeichnerisches Werk. 1960 wurde Karel Appel mit dem Internationalen Preis der Guggenheim Foundation geehrt. Als Weltbürger und selbst ernannter „Staatenloser“ lebte und arbeitete Appel in New York, Paris und Monaco.

Thanks to a generous gift, the Albertina will for the first time present a group of twelve monumental nude drawings by the Dutch artist Karel Appel from the 1980s (1921 Amsterdam – 2006 Zurich). Appel was one of the founders of CoBrA, a group of artists formed in Paris in 1948, whose paintings represent a new expressive figuration. In Appel’s works rationality and emotion are intertwined, as are abstraction and figuration. Powerful colours and gestural painting also characterise his important drawings. In 1960 Karel Appel received the International Award of the Guggenheim Foundation. As a citizen of the world and self-proclaimed "man without a country", he lived and worked in New York, Paris and Monaco.
