Course programme

Two very different media, etching and the internet, have something in common: they address their message to a wide public. Duplication in the field of art is not only a current phenomenon; it has a history of concrete concerns and political messages. To convey these requires clear formulation. Our field of interest will include everyday and personal matters, and will reflect current political events and global themes in the context of our actual life. The main task will be for each to find a way, amongst the many possibilities of artistic expression, to formulate personal concerns, to develop a personal imagery and to visualise an idea.
All intaglio techniques will be taught in stages: drypoint, line-etching, aquatinta and coloured etching. Then we will venture into experimental fields, combining these with relief printing. The focus will be on the use of a particular technique for a specific purpose.
Besides the visual advantages of etching, we shall also try to use the smooth surface of the computer screen and the "public space of the internet" for our purposes. A joint homepage, which we shall make under expert supervision, will allow us to have a virtual exhibition and worldwide communication. Both media can be used, with varying intensity. Konrad Winter wishes to generate new approaches, and will try to give students a fresh view of their own work, free of conventions, as well as to encourage individual and personal aspects.
If possible, students should bring tools and laptops.
