Josef Hampl je známý hlavně jako autor šitých koláží, v nichž uplatnil do té doby neobvyklé technické postupy. Kombinoval totiž šití na stroji s kresbou. Začínal však jako grafik a grafice se dlouhá léta věnoval. V mládí se přátelil s Vladimírem Boudníkem, byl jím zpočátku ovlivněn, ale vždy si hledal a nacházel vlastní cestu.

Josef Hampl is best known as the creator of sewn collages, in which he used technical methods that were unusual at the time. He combined machine sewing with drawing. However, he started out as a graphic artist and devoted many years to graphic art. In his youth, he was friends with Vladimír Boudník, who initially influenced him, but he always sought and found his own path.
